How to Maintain F-1 Status -General Guideline

It is the responsibility of each student to be familiar with the immigration requirements related to their status. Following the guidelines below may help you to avoid an accidental violation.

  • Report to the DSO to have your SEVIS record registered in SEVIS in a timely manner
  • Enroll in a full course load for the duration of your program
  • Make normal progress towards completing the course of study
  • Keep Form I-20 valid by following proper procedures
  • Abide by the grace period rules after your program ends
  • Maintain satisfactory academic status throughout the duration of your program by attending your courses and achieving the program required G.P.A.
  • Report any changes to your DSO, including U.S. address changes, employment changes, or visa changes
  • Review Study in the States – Maintaining Status for additional details.

How to Maintain F-1 Status - Actions Guide

  • Enroll in a full course-load 

    • Cannot drop courses to part-time

    • Graduate/doctoral students: 2 academic courses/semester +Internship course (if CPT approved)

    • Undergraduate students: 4 academic courses/semester +Internship course (if CPT approved)

  • Attend all classes 

  • Good academic standing

    • Maintain G.P.A.

    • Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)

  • Meet university requirements

    • Official Transcripts (within 60 days of the program start date)

    • Financial obligations

  • Update IA advisor/DSO of important changes

    • U.S. Address/Contact Information-Submit the Contact Update Link here on the University Forms webpage

    • Visa/Status Change -Submit the Change of Status form here on the University Forms webpage

    • *International Travel- Submit the International Travel Request form on the University Forms webpage

    • *Employer Change - Submit the Change of CPT Application form on the University Forms webpage

    • *Change in graduation date - After confirming with Student Service/academic advisor-Email IA advisor
